Paj-Puj: Counting in Uyghur

Counting in Uyghur

ئۇيغۇرچە ساناش

Cardinal numbers are the numbers used when counting (e.g., "one", "two", "three", etc.), which is very straightforward and logical in Uyghur. To start, one has the numbers from 0 to 9:

zero
نۆل

one
بىر

two
ئىككى

three
ئۈچ

four
تۆت

five
بەش

six
ئالتە

seven
يەتتە

eight
سەككىز

nine
توققۇز

Afterwards, one needs to learn the multiples of 10 (i.e., "ten", "twenty", "thirty", etc.)

ten
ئون

twenty
يىگىرمە

thirty
ئوتتۇز

forty
قىرىق

fifty
ئەللىك

sixty
ئاتمىش

seventy
يەتمىش

eighty
سەكسەن

ninety
توقسان

And, finally, one has the higher powers of ten (i.e., "hundred", "thousand", "million", etc.)

hundred
يۈز

thousand
مىڭ

million
مىليون

billion
مىليارد

trillion
ترىليون

Having learned all of the above, one can now form most commonly used numbers in the very simple largest-to-smallest fashion. For example:

seventeen
ئون يەتتە

two hundred eleven
ئىككى يۈز ئون بىر

one thousand nine hundred eighty-five
بىر مىڭ توققۇز يۈز سەكسەن بەش

nine million nine hundred ninety-nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine
توققۇز مىليون توققۇز يۈز توقسان توققۇز مىڭ توققۇز يۈز توقسان توققۇز
